Attalia (modern Antalya, Turkey) is mentioned near the close of Paul's First Missionary Journey (Acts 14:25-26), but Paul undoubtedly passed through there on his way to Perga earlier in the same journey. The city was relatively compact in Paul's day, though now it constitutes only a small neighborhood in the eighth largest city of Turkey. See links below for details about the city walls, Hadrian's Gate, the so-called "Truncated Minaret," and the Hidirlik Tower. Most of these features have later additions from Seljuk times. Most of the archaeology that takes place in the city is of the type described below by Metin Pevlivaner—investigations before construction permits are granted within the old city.
