The Cydnus River (now called Berman Cayi) caused frequent problems to ancient Tarsus, due to periodic overflowing of its banks. The Emperor Justinian, who reigned 527-565 CE, solved the problem by creating an alternate channel for the river at flood stage. Eventually, the river followed the new course exclusively, no longer flowing through Tarsus to its former port at the Rhegma lagoon. The bridge Justinian built over the new channel was still in use until the 20th century, but it now stands beside the river as a major feature in Kuvai Milliye Park.
