All of the highlighted lands of the central Mediterranean were occupied by Greeks. By as early as 1000 BCE, Greeks had ventured out of their mother country to colonize other lands, taking with them Greek language and culture. By the first century CE, the Romans had conqured all of these lands and organized them into provinces of the Roman empire.
