Acts of the Apostles (NT)

Bible Commentaries on the Book of Acts (Acts of the Apostles)

The Book of Acts (also known as “The Acts of the Apostles”) is uniquely significant among the New Testament books because it provides the historical framework for the first 30 years after the Cross and the Resurrection of Christ. If you know Acts, you have “hooks” on which to hang most of the rest of the New Testament books. It provides accounts of the conversion of various people from sinners to saints, which serve as a wonderful complement to Paul’s teachings about justification, regeneration, and conversion. By studying Acts you can also gain a better understanding of how God’s church got its start and the way in which the apostles and other primitive Christians related to each other and to the Lord. In an effort to help you in your selection process, I will be adding comments here and there, as I am able. They will all be in this same navy-blue color. —Steve

Acts 1-14 (Volume 1), International Critical Commentary
By C.K. Barrett / ContinuumFor over one hundred years, the International Critical Commentary series has held a special place among works on the Bible. It has sought to bring together all the relevant aids to exegesis – linguistic and textual no less than archaeological, historical, literary and theological – with a level of comprehension and quality of scholarship unmatched by any other series. No attempt has been made to secure a uniform theological or critical approach to the biblical text: contributors have been invited for their scholarly distinction, not for their adherence to any one school of thought. The first paperback editions to be published cover the heart of the New Testament, providing a wealth of information and research in accessible and attractive format. [TOP]check_price

34307: You Are My Witnesses (Acts), Welwyn Commentary Series

You Are My Witnesses (Acts), Welwyn Commentary Series
By Gordon Keddie / Evangelical PressActs is first and foremost the history of the work of the Holy Spirit in the church. It brings together two great promises of “another Counsellor”, who would lead the disciples into all truth and the Great Commission to preach the gospel to the whole world in the assurance that he would be with them always, “to the very end of the age.” Acts is also the record of costly campaigning against a fiercely resistant enemy, over the eternal destiny of lost men and women. The sounds of battle echo from almost every scene. But so also does the scent of victory, as lives are changed and the light of Christ spreads from nation to nation!check_price

45010: The Acts of the Apostles: A Socio-Rhetorical Commentary

The Acts of the Apostles: A Socio-Rhetorical Commentary
By Ben Witherington / Eerdmans Publishing Co.The Acts of the Apostles breaks fresh ground in providing a detailed social and rhetorical analysis of the book of Acts. This commentary interacts with the scholarly discussion found in the various excursuses in the book , draws on the best new insights from a number of disciplines (narratological studies of Luke-Acts, archaeological and social scientific study of the New Testament, rhetorical analysis of Acts, comparative studies in ancient historiography) to provide the reader with the benefits of recent innovative ways of analyzing the text of Acts.In addition, Witherington gives detailed attention to major theological and historical issues, including the question of the relationship of Acts to the Pauline letters, the question of early Christian history and how the church grew and developed, the relationship between early Judaism and early Christianity, and the relationship between Christianity and the officials of the Roman Empire. Acts is seen as a historical monograph with affinities with the approaches of serious Greek historians such as Thucydides and Polybius in terms of methodology, and affinities with some forms of Jewish historiography (including Old Testament history) in terms of content or subject matter. The book is illustrated with various pictures and charts, which help to bring to light the character and setting of these narratives.check_price

Reading Acts: A Literary and Theological Commentary
By Charles H. Talbert / Smyth & Helwys Publishing, IncAnswers to the usual introductory questions do not yield sufficient harvest to enable an intelligent reading of Acts. The approach of this book is to ask how ancient Mediterranean auditors would have heard Acts when it was read in their presence. To be successful Talbert divides this approach into two parts: how Acts would have been heard in its precanonical context and in its canonical context.
The Reading the New Testament commentary series presents cutting edge biblical research in accessible language that is both coherent and comprehensive.check_price

Acts of the Holy Spirit: A Modern Commentary on the Book of Acts
By C. Peter Wagner / Gospel LightScholarly, accessible, and practical. C. Peter Wagner’s commentary on the entire book of Acts is a wonderful exposition of the story of the early church and the activity of its awesome God, in which Wagner attempts to answer important questions like “Is there one true Church?” “Why are there so many differences?” and “What is essential?”. One major emphasis in Wagner’s exposition is the description of how the first disciples of Christ learned to overcome spiritual and cultural resistance, which has particular relevance to contemporary missionary endeavors. What sets this commentary apart is its focus on bridging the gap between the early church and our current church, which offers us a vivid picture of God’s plan for His church, both then and now. John Maxwell says of this commentary, “What a joy it is to add C. Peter Wagner’s creative new commentary on Acts to my library!” Missionary expert Thom Rainer states that “No other commentary on Acts has so captured its missiological and church-growth perspectives.” And Jack Hayford describes it this way: “C.
