Ancient road (downtown Tarsus)

Here is an example of an accidental excavation, also known as a rescue excavation. In 1993, construction workers, digging for the foundation of a modern building, discovered the telltale signs of an ancient city: columns, pavement, and building stones. They alerted local officials who in turn contacted Professor Doctor Levent Zoroğlu, who conducted excavations every summer from 1993 to 2001.
