The Apostle Paul arrived in Malta by accident, as the result of a terrible storm at sea, ending in a shipwreck somewhere on Malta (Acts 27:12 – 28:10). Local tradition on Malta places his landing in what is called “St. Paul’s Bay,” on the northern end of Malta Island, and this seems to agree with details in the text of Acts. An alternate landing site, however, has recently been proposed at the southern tip of the same island, claiming confirmation by four first-century sea anchors that divers have found there. Of course, we have no way of proving that these particular anchors belonged to the ship that carried the apostle.
